Speaking Up: What does it look like? - Thursday, April 24th, 6:30-8:00 PM

Nadia Telsey, of Breaking Free, and Jo Kingman, of Moving Image Productions

Self-defense instructors often tell girls and women to speak up at the first sign of trouble, but this is easier said than done and we rarely see such assertiveness modeled. We will show a scene from a DVD-in-progress that shows passivity and then models assertiveness in a party "scenario" where a teenage girl attends a college party with some other teenage friends. This provides opportunities for discussions about topics such as gender roles expectations that are a barrier to speaking up, pressures faced by adolescent girls and boys and a bystander intervention.

• FREE & OPEN to ENTIRE COMMUNITY - Parents and teenagers strongly encouraged to attend
